Following up after submitting a resume is vital for a job seeker. “Once you have submitted your application for a job, unless the hiring manager tells you specifically not to follow up, you can’t just leave the application hanging out there and wait,” explains career coach Hallie Crawford. Here are three ways to effectively follow up after submitting a resume and tips for increasing your likelihood of success.

Send a Follow-Up Email

This is the most common way to touch base with a recruiter in the modern age. It’s quick, convenient and an effective way to remind them of your interest in a job. And with any luck, they’ll quickly find it in their inbox and give you serious consideration as a candidate.

There are three key things you need to include in a follow-up email:

  • Your name and the title of the position in the subject line
  • A professional introduction that includes the hiring manager’s name
  • A brief account of your experience and credentials
  • Your email address and phone number

That way a hiring manager can quickly identify you, be reminded of your qualifications and reach out to you after just a glance.

Write a Follow-Up Letter

Going this route is more conventional and can work nicely because of the personal touch it offers. Not many hiring managers receive physical follow-up letters, so this can be good for putting you on their radar.

When writing one, you’ll want to use a standard business letter format and include the following:

  • The recruiter’s name and title
  • The company’s address
  • The date you wrote the letter
  • A professional introduction that includes the hiring manager’s name
  • A brief account of your experience and credentials
  • Your signature
  • Your address, phone number, and email

Make a Follow-Up Call  

Finally, there’s a phone call, which works well for connecting on a personal level and is a great way for reminding a hiring manager of what you bring to the table. In order to be successful, there are a few tips to follow:

  • Call either early or late in the day because a recruiter should be less occupied
  • Call no more than twice (if you get sent to voicemail, just leave a brief message, including your name, phone number and a good time they can reach you)
  • Thank them for their time, remind them of your qualifications and let them know that you’re eager for an interview

At the closing, ask what the next steps are in the hiring process and if the recruiter needs any more information. Do that, and you should be in good shape.
