Have Defined Values

That’s why it’s critical to have open communication and be as clear as possible with your expectations. 

Set Realistic Deadlines

Deadlines are obviously important. They’re what keep projects on track and your customers happy. But you need to be careful not to spread your staff too thin when setting deadlines, as this can create added stress and cause procrastination, which ultimately hurts productivity.

Here are some tips for setting realistic deadlines:

  • consider delays in the past;
  • assume there will be setbacks;
  • give some extra time to account for similar delays and setbacks; and
  • don’t push your employees beyond their limits to avoid burnout.

Hold Employees Accountable, But Equip Them With Adequate Resources

Another big part of creating a productive work environment is holding employees accountable. Having clear consequences — both good and bad — in place for their actions. Positive consequences might be employee recognition or the potential for a promotion. Negative consequences might be staying overtime to correct a mistake or missing out on a promotion.

For this to work and get the most from your staff, you also need to provide them with the right resources and give them enough autonomy to make their own decisions. In others words, you need to find the right balance between accountability and authority.
