Job hopping has become increasingly common, especially among younger workers. Gallup says, “21 percent of millennials say they’ve changed jobs within the past year, which is more than three times the number of non-millennials who report the same.” If you’re what employers would consider a “job hopper,” there are a few resume tips you should follow.

Optimize Your Summary Statement

The summary statement is one of the first things recruiters see on your resume. It gives them a feel for your qualifications and accomplishments. Getting this part right should grab their attention and potentially help them overlook a prior history of job hopping. Your summary statement should accomplish three things, explains career writer Tom Gerencer:

  • match the employer’s needs;
  • list achievements and skills; and
  • include measurable achievements.

If you want to prove to an employer you’ll be around for the long haul, you could mention you’re seeking a long-term position and career development.

Don’t Include Every Single Job

While one person may remain at a single job for five years or longer, you might have been at several positions during that time. But you don’t need to mention every single job you’ve held, because that could potentially hurt your chances. If you worked at one job for two years and only three months at another, you could just skip the latter on your resume.  

Be Clear When Job Hopping Was Involuntary  

It’s important to remember short stays at different jobs aren’t always by choice on the employee’s part. There are many different factors and circumstances that should be taken into consideration. If job hopping was involuntary due to you working temporary positions, gig jobs, company downsizing, etc. you should let the recruiter know. 

Focus on Core Skills and Competencies

At the end of the day, a hiring manager is most interested in what you can bring to their company. That’s what is most important. Pay close attention to what they’re looking for in their job description, and explain how your core skills and competencies match that. Explain how the various projects you’ve been part of at different companies have prepared you for the job you’re applying for.

A good chunk of individuals job hop at some point in their career. While this may seem like a strike against you when it comes to landing a new job, following these resume tips should help you make a positive impression.
