When it comes to your resume, you want it to be rock solid and cover all pertinent information that will influence a recruiter’s hiring decision. At the same time, you don’t want to go overboard with extraneous information that’s only going to subtract from your qualifications. Here are some tips on how to flesh out your resume without making it any longer.

Try a Smaller Font

Perhaps the easiest way to incorporate valuable information without lengthening your resume is to experiment with a smaller font. While you don’t want to go as small as say a size seven, switching from a 12 to 10.5 font can give you some extra room without adversely affecting its readability.

Remove Unnecessary, Irrelevant and Redundant Information

Another way to give your resume more substance is to get rid of extraneous information that doesn’t really serve a purpose. For instance, you probably don’t need to include every single job you worked during high school if you’re in your mid-30s. As a general rule of thumb, you only need to include the last 10 years of your resume.

A lot of experts even suggest removing your objective because it isn’t usually necessary, especially if you’re sending an accompanying cover letter. Some other things you can remove include:

  • Salary history
  • “References available upon request”
  • Irrelevant social media accounts

You should also ensure that you’re not repeating yourself with the information you provide recruiters. Just be as clear and concise as possible.

Cut Down on Education

Unless you’re fresh out of high school, there’s usually no reason to include your high school education. Just include your college level education or any relevant certifications you’ve received.

Beef Up the Experience Section

What you DO want to elaborate on is your experience. By eliminating superfluous information, you can go into more detail without having to lengthen your resume. Some specific areas to highlight include the skills you possess that relate to the position you’re applying for, any previous jobs you’ve held that make you a qualified candidate and any notable accomplishments. You may also want to include a skills section that mentions the relevant hard and soft skills that would be of interest to a recruiter.

It’s a good idea to fine-tune your resume and flesh it out from time-to-time. By following these tips, you can get rid of the extraneous details and focus more wholly on what’s legitimately important.
