When it comes to hiring, it’s not all that hard to get caught up in a perfectionist mindset where you’re only willing to hire a model employee. In reality, there is no “perfect hire,” and everyone is going to have flaws to some extent. The problem with perfectionism is that it can actually throw a wrench in the hiring process and halt your progress. Here are some tips for making a quality hire without setting unrealistic goals for yourself.

Create a List of Must-Have Traits

You can liken the process of hiring to searching for a new home or a car. While you’re unlikely to find a home or car that has every single thing you’re looking for, you should be able to find one that has all of the must-haves to the point that it meets your expectations and is satisfactory. To streamline your hiring, it’s helpful to compile a list of must-have traits and target candidates who possess them. Doing so ensures that you’re upholding quality standards, but aren’t searching for what’s unattainable.

Set Deadlines

Deadlines are extremely important when filling a vacant position, for two main reasons. First, hiring takes time and money, which can hurt both your productivity and profitability if it goes on for too long. Second, you may end up losing out on hiring someone who would excel at a position because you’re being overly choosy.

If you take an extended period of time to give the green light, that person may simply give up and find employment elsewhere. That’s why it pays to have a deadline in which a position must be filled.

Interview Multiple Candidates

An effective way to gauge the talent pool is to simply conduct interviews with a few different candidates. This will help you get a feel for what caliber of talent you’re dealing with, which should help you make a decision. If you don’t have the time to formally interview several candidates, then you could always have brief phone calls to get a better sense of their qualifications and narrow it down from there.

Consider Using Temps While Hiring  

Finally, you may want to utilize temporary workers throughout your hiring. This kills two birds with one stone because you can ensure that you’ve got adequate manpower – and you may end up finding a temp who fits your business like a glove. In this case, you can simply hire them on permanently.

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good when hiring. While you never want to settle or be complacent with a candidate who’s “just okay,” perfectionism can be a hindrance to your progress. But by taking the right approach and being realistic, there’s no reason why you can’t find the right fit for your company without a lot of complications in the process.
