In fact, many businesses need extra manpower during this time of year – and other candidates are usually lying low, which can give you the perfect opportunity to get ahead. Use the following four tips to help you in your holiday job search.

1) Ramp Up Your Job Search Efforts

When the holiday season rolls around in November, a lot of candidates slow down their search or cut it out altogether until it’s the new year. You can use this to your advantage because you’re likely to have considerably less competition than you would otherwise. By keeping your foot on the gas pedal, putting out applications and getting your resume out there, you should be able to gain some traction and get noticed by employers.

2) Be Flexible With Interviewing

It’s common for employers to have hectic schedules during the holidays, and sometimes hiring managers may be on vacation. Consequently, you may be asked to interview at a moment’s notice or at an unconventional time. If you’re able to keep your schedule open and be flexible, you can make an interview that other candidates may not be able to, which will put you at an advantage.

3) Be Open to Temporary Positions

Because of increased consumer demand in many industries during the holidays, it often puts employers in a position where they need additional manpower. In turn, this opens up many temporary/seasonal jobs where you’re hired on for a limited time. While this may not be ideal if you’re looking for permanent employment, it could end up working out for you. By making a good first impression, you can get your foot in the door and could potentially get hired on permanently. Even if it doesn’t work out, the employer could put in a good word for you, which could lead to other opportunities.

4) Capitalize on Networking Opportunities

The holidays are a time when there are countless parties and get-togethers, which means one thing – it’s an excellent time to network and let other people know that you’re actively searching for a job. Whenever you’re at an event, you should make it a point to ask around and see if anyone knows of any employment opportunities. You can also get in touch with family, friends and acquaintances by sending out holiday greetings. When doing so, you could throw in a subtle note asking if they know of any available jobs.

While searching for employment during the holidays may sound counter-intuitive to some, it’s actually an excellent time to see what’s out there. By following these tips and using available resources, there’s a good chance you’ll find something to your liking.
